APPLIED ELECTRONICS & INSTRUMENTATION ENGINEERING (AEIE) contd.

OVERVIEW:
Instrumentation is the most happening field in the world now. Electronics and Instrumentation
Engineering is essentially the application of Electronics in the Field of Instrumentation Engineering.
Since Electronics being the order of the day, it is very much necessary for the young minds to get
accustomed with the latest developments in Electronics field. Instrumentation is defined as the art and
science of measurement and control of process parameters like temperature, pressure, flow-rate,
humidity, density, viscosity, moistures, velocity etc. through proper designing and configuring of
automated systems in electrical, pneumatic domains within a production or manufacturing area. To
measure and control the parameters in a process or in a particular system, devices such as sensors,
transducers, transmitters, microprocessors, microcontrollers, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC),
Distributed Control System (DCS), Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) are used.
Instrumentation engineers work with the industries with the goal of improving productivity,
optimisation, stability, reliability, safety and continuity. Over the past three decades the field of
instrumentation engineering is contributing in extremely widespread applications in the industries like
(1) Process Industries such as Steel Plants, Refineries, Power plant, Chemical and Fertilizer plants,
Textile industries, Petrochemical Industries, Food processing Industries., (2) Mining & Metallurgy
industries, (3) Robotics and Bio-Medical Instrumentation, (4) Automobile Instrumentation industries,
(5) Navigational & Aerospace Organization, Weather Stations etc. (6) Building Management
Instrumentation, (7) Automation engineering companies.

Therefore, Instrumentation being one of the most important sought branches from the Industrial point of view, a combination of Electronics and Instrumentation would fetch high dividends for the students who take up Electronics and Instrumentation as their career course. Electronics and Instrumentation Engineers have a bright future ahead of them as they are needed by almost all Industries in various cadres like Design, Development, Fabrication, Inspection, Quality control, Maintenance, Service and so on. As published by the famous media house, The Hindu, “Automation is the buzz word in process industry, and automation is the core job of instrumentation engineers. Hence, the demand for instrumentation will always be there. By the year 2015, with so many industries coming up, the need of instrumentation engineers is eventually going to increase as thousands of them are required.” The department of AEIE of Dr. B. C. Roy Engineering College has started its journey from 2002. To produce Industry Ready Instrumentation Engineers, the department is fully equipped with modern laboratories, Smart classrooms and highly proficient professors who have their academic degrees from the reputed institutes like IIT (Kharagpur), IIT (Kanpur), Jadavpur University, IIEST (Shibpur) and NITs. The department has entered into a mutual partnership with core Instrumentation MNCs like Jhonson Control (USA), Yokogawa (Japan) and others for building up effective Industry Institute interaction. To gain educational and career information about Instrumentation, the AEIE department has build up strong bonding with some international professional societies like Instrumentation Society of America (ISA), IEEE Instrumentation and Measurements society of USA and Institute of Measurement and Control of UK.

While many of the alumni of the department are in service with the organisations like TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Honeywell, Yokogawa, Jhonson Control, Indian Air Force, General Electric, Jindal Steel, CTS, Capgemini, HP, Sankalp Semiconductor, Biecco Lawrie Ltd., L&T, BOC etc. while others have thrived for higher studies and doing their M.Tech from JU, IITs, NITs (upon getting high GATE scores) and MS from reputed foreign Universities like University of Florida (USA).
