Soft Skills Can Make or Break an Engineer's Career, IIT Roorkee Professor Tells Durgapur Students

Soft skills are as vital as technical knowledge for an engineer's success, said Dr. Binod Mishra, Professor of English at IIT Roorkee, at a guest lecture for students of Dr. B. C. Roy Engineering College (BCREC), Durgapur. Speaking on "Soft Skills and Its Significance in a Professional World" at the college's D. M. Auditorium, Prof. Mishra covered communication, interpersonal skills, professional behaviour and cultural awareness. Acting Principal Prof. (Dr.) K. M. Hossain felicitated him.

"Soft skills are behavioural skills. Your voice, your attitude and your behaviour become an important part of your professional identity," he said. He urged students to read books and newspaper editorials regularly to build communication skills and political awareness, and recommended his free NPTEL courses on soft skills, public speaking and communicative English. The programme also inaugurated two student clubs under the Department of Basic Sciences and Humanities: the Eloquence Society, a soft skills club, and the Science and Aptitude Club, which focuses on mathematical reasoning and aptitude practice.

Despite heavy rain, a large number of students attended and took part in a question-and-answer session lasting nearly 40 minutes.

It is praise worthy that Dr. B. C. Roy Engineering College is not only focused on the technical knowledge of the future engineers but is also continuously working for the holistic development of students, to make them successful professionals in every possible way.
