The Department offers B.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering and M.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering. Vision of the Department is to deliver world-class education and research in Mechanical Engineering, with particular regard to their application in industry, healthcare and commerce in a diverse society. The Department has a conducive ambience and specialized laboratories like CAD-CAM & Robotics Lab, Mechatronics and Modern control Lab, etc along with conventional laboratories like Mechanical Workshops, Thermal lab, Dynamics of Machines Lab, etc. The infrastructure fully supports experiments as prescribed in MAKAUT curriculum. Separate Computer Laboratory was established for teaching computer aided design and analysis of devices using various software like AutoCAD, Creo, ANSYS etc. The department is facilitated with high speed internet connection for acquiring knowledge from the web. Undergraduate students get opportunity to involve themselves in high-end research work to build skills beyond curriculum. In addition to classes, the Department organizes regular visiting lectures delivered by Industry Experts and arranges industrial visits for both faculty and students. Postgraduate scholars are engaged in high-end research and publication activities. The Department has been simply unstoppable in its progress as it has been actively involved in various activities that have brought to light the hidden talents of the ME students and staff.

Our department is the stronghold of highly qualified and industry-experienced faculties having their degrees from IITs, NITs, IIEST, Jadavpur University and other leading universities in India. Our faculty members are continuously attending various training programs, publishing research papers, books and innovative projects.

We are striving hard continuously to improve upon the quality of education and to maintain its position of leadership in engineering and technology. Our guiding philosophy at BCREC has been that ‘hands-on learning’ or ‘learning by doing’ trumps all other forms of learning.  It is fair to say that this philosophy has served us well in making all the students exposed to our methods take a quantum leap in better appreciating, understanding, learning and applying the engineering concepts and impart technical know-how to students, promote their problem solving skills and innovation of new technologies. In the process our students have realized that learning can be easy, enriching and fun. Department also offers large number of interdisciplinary courses for providing cross cutting knowledge to the students to pursue their interest. We are sure that going forward, their exposure to our pedagogy will serve them well in all their academic and professional pursuits and careers. Recruiters always want to see in their employees, quality to show uniqueness in creativity and flexibility to blend in a team. Placement record of Mechanical Engineering Students in various organizations supports their quality of excellence. Students of this department are placed in leading Industries including Government organizations. We are happy to share that some of our students are pursuing higher studies in leading universities in India and abroad. I am certain that our students will prove to be an invaluable asset to an organization.

Siddhartha Bhowmick 2025 ADVANCED GAS SHIELDING SYSTEM FOR IMPROVED WELD QUALITY AND REDUCED SPATTER PUBLICATION DATE (U/S 11A) 14/03/2025 FIELD OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to the field of welding technology, and more particularly to an advanced gas shielding system that enhances weld quality, minimizes spatter, and improves the efficiency of the welding process. BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Welding is a fundamental process in the fabrication and manufacturing industry. Gas shielding plays a critical role in ensuring high-quality welds by protecting the molten weld pool from atmospheric contaminants, such as oxygen and nitrogen, which can cause defects. Traditional gas shielding systems often result in inconsistent coverage, turbulence, and excessive spatter, leading to poor weld quality and increased post-weld cleaning efforts. Current gas shielding techniques rely on static gas nozzles that provide uniform flow rates but fail to dynamically adapt to the varying conditions of the welding arc and the metal surface. This results in uneven gas coverage, porosity in the weld, and higher material wastage. There is, therefore, a need for an advanced gas shielding system that dynamically optimizes gas distribution, reduces spatter, and enhances overall weld quality. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The present invention provides an advanced gas shielding system that incorporates intelligent control mechanisms to regulate gas flow and distribution in real time. The system includes an adaptive gas nozzle, a flow control unit, and a feedback mechanism to dynamically adjust shielding parameters based on welding conditions. The proposed system significantly improves gas efficiency, enhances arc stability, reduces spatter, and ensures high-quality welds by maintaining optimal shielding throughout the welding process. The system is applicable to various welding techniques, including Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW), and Plasma Arc Welding (PAW). DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION 1. System Components: The advanced gas shielding system comprises the following components: (a) Adaptive Gas Nozzle: A dynamically adjustable gas nozzle designed to modify shielding gas flow and distribution based on welding parameters. The nozzle includes a set of movable baffles or diffusers that alter the flow characteristics in real time. (b) Flow Control Unit: A microcontroller-based system that regulates gas flow rate and pressure. The unit receives input from sensors monitoring arc characteristics, temperature, and weld pool dynamics to adjust the shielding gas accordingly. (c) Sensor Array: A combination of optical, thermal, and acoustic sensors that continuously monitor welding conditions, such as arc stability, spatter levels, and gas coverage. (d) Feedback and Adjustment Mechanism: A closed-loop control system that analyzes sensor data and modulates gas flow in response to detected variations. This ensures optimal shielding conditions at all times. (e) Gas Distribution Module: A multi-channel delivery system that directs gas to specific regions of the weld zone, minimizing turbulence and maximizing coverage. 2. Working Principle: The system operates through a continuous feedback loop. The sensors collect real-time data from the welding arc and the surrounding environment. This data is processed by the microcontroller, which determines the necessary adjustments to the gas shielding parameters. The adaptive gas nozzle modifies its configuration accordingly, ensuring a steady and uniform gas flow tailored to the welding conditions. The dynamic regulation of shielding gas prevents excessive turbulence and ensures complete coverage of the molten weld pool. The result is a significant reduction in oxidation, porosity, and spatter formation. 3. Key Advantages: (a) Improved Weld Quality: The system minimizes weld defects, such as porosity and oxidation, by maintaining optimal shielding conditions. (b) Reduced Spatter: Dynamic gas control prevents erratic arc behavior, significantly reducing spatter and post-weld cleanup efforts. (c) Enhanced Gas Efficiency: Optimized gas flow reduces wastage and minimizes operational costs. (d) Versatility: The system is compatible with multiple welding processes and can be adapted for use in automated and robotic welding setups. (e) Real-time Adaptation: The system responds instantly to changes in welding conditions, ensuring continuous process optimization. 4. Potential Applications: • Automotive manufacturing • Aerospace welding • Shipbuilding and marine fabrication • Structural steel welding • Precision welding in electronics and medical device manufacturing CLAIMS: 1.
